GUTTUSO Renato

Bagheria (PA), 1912 - Rome, 1987 Painter. From 1935 he was part of the anti-Fascist movement and adopted realism as a way of representing the present and his moral stance, inspired by nineteenth century realism, Picasso in the 'Guernica' period and folk art. From 1940 to 1942 he was a leading exponent of the Milan movement 'Corrente' (Crocefissione [Crucifixion], 1941). In 1947 he was one of the founders of the 'Fronte Nuovo delle Arti' and one of the movers and shakers of social realism, sidestepping its dry political propaganda. In the late 1950's he updated his style with elements from a wide variety of new cultural influences.
