Painter. In Milan in 1909, he studied literature. He began painting in Paris in 1919 in a post-Cubist, purist context, turning to an intense archaism expressed in balanced formal simplicity. After encountering Etruscan art in 1928, he began work on his hallmark archetypal figures, with geometrical forms executed in chalky tones. In Paris he became part of the group of 'Italiens', and became famous throughout Europe. In 1933 he wrote the 'Manifesto della pittura murale' [Manifesto for mural painting] and began working on frescoes (Milan Triennale 1933).
