MORANDI Giorgio

Bologna, 1890 - 1964 He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna (1907-13). His brief involvement with Futurism (1914), Metaphysical art (1918-20) and then “Valori Plastici” [“Plastic values”] and “Il Selvaggio” [“The Savage”], and participation in the twentieth century exhibitions did not undermine his intense artistic career, which reworked the concepts of landscape and still life with an eye to Cézanne, Vermeer, Chardin and Corot, extracting what is essentially tone painting. His etchings are remarkable. In the post-war period his solitary studies were critically considered an example of method and coherence.
