PITTARA Carlo

?, 1835 o 1836 – Rivara Canavese (Turin), 1891

Painter and etcher. Key figure in the Rivara School. After studying with G. Camino he spent time in Geneva then Paris (1858-60), where he encountered French Realism. In 1862 he exhibited Dintorni di Rivara [Rivara environs] (Turin, GAM), at the Promotrice, his first experiment with Realism. From 1861 to 1872 he led the Canavese group. Subsequently, after a stay in Rome in the 1870's, he moved to Paris, returning to Rivara every summer.
