The restoration of “In limine” by Giuseppe Penone

The conservative restoration of Giuseppe Penone’s work “In limine” is almost completed, carried out in 2011 by the De Fornaris Foundation on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy and inaugurated on April 18 of that year by the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano. The monumental sculpture, located in Corso Galileo Ferraris next to the Gam – of which it forms a sort of symbolic entrance portal – is made up of a bronze tree and a block of white marble, accompanied by plant elements.

The marble needed an intervention, as the degradation phenomena present in the bronze part above caused the appearance of green and brown stains and drips, which were to disfigure among other things the imprint of the artist’s hand imprinted in the marble itself. The delicate work is entrusted to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence and in particular to the restorer Marta Gomez Ubierna, under the supervision of the artist. After the first phase, before considering the completed intervention, we will have to wait a few weeks to check the reaction of the materials to cleaning.
