BOCCIONI Umberto

Reggio Calabria, 1882 - Sorte (VR), 1916 Leading figure in the Futurist movement. In Rome from around 1900, he studied under Balla, and there met Severini. In Milan from 1907, he met F.T. Marinetti, Carrà and Russolo. He made a vital contribution to the Technical Manifesto of Futurist Painting (1910) and the Technical Manifesto of Futurist Sculpture (1912). In 1911 and 1912 he encountered Cubism in Paris. Dynamism, simultaneity, the compenetration of planes and forms, a synthesis of vision and memory bring his paintings (La città che sale [The city rises], Visioni simultanee [Simultaneous visions], Gli addii [The farewells]) and sculptures (Forme uniche nella continuità dello spazio [Unique forms of continuity in space], 1913) to life with effects of fluidity and great energy.
