A painter. He attended the free course of Nude Painting in Venice and made his debut in 1949. His initial works were neo-Cubist abstracts. In 1951 he met Peggy Guggenheim, who gave him space for his studio. Along the lines of American gestural painting, he developed a semiotic-chromatic form of automatism. After moving to Milan in 1955, he came into contact with the artists of Cobra and, after 1960, under the influence of Munch, he returned to a larval, grotesque form of representation ("Facezie", "Matti").
