Biography

The son of an Italian sculptor who emigrated to the USA in 1936, he moved to Rome, where in the 1950s his painting evolved from a post-Cubist style towards material and gestural forms. He returned to New York in 1959 and exhibited works made by intertwining elastic bands and strips of canvas on looms at Leo Castelli's gallery. His long professional relationship and friendship with Castelli lasted until the late 1990s, and included numerous solo and group exhibitions.
