Biography

He attended the Academy of Budapest and then, in 1930, moved to Paris, where he worked as a draughtsman. After settling in Zurich, in 1946 he started making relief paintings with sand, dried herbs, buttons and stones. After joining the the Cobra group, in the early 1950s he used coloured glass and, in particular, metal, which was to remain his material of choice in his relief paintings. In 1964 he won the main prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale.
