Portrait of a Man (Giovanni Battista Bottero), 1851, Oil on cardboard, 40.7 x 30.4 cm

Portrait of a Man (Giovanni Battista Bottero), 1851

A painter, he studied at the Accademia di Brera in Milan. From his personal participation in the Risorgimento he gained abundant graphic material which he then used in paintings that illustrate the warlike virtues of the new nation state. His painting also includes illustrations of private life, often linked to the impact of historical events on daily life. He worked on genre painting, taking inspiration from his brother Domenico, as well as on portraits: and indeed it was in portraiture that he best brought out his skills as a master of colour.
