He graduated in Medicine in 1940 and began to paint during the war. After working on non-figurative painting he started creating works in which form, colour and material texturing all came together (Blacks, Tars, Moulds and then, from 1952, Sacks). In 1951 he founded the Gruppo Origine with Colla, Ballocco and Capogrossi. His work is considered as a model for Informal Art in Europe and beyond. A museum dedicated to him was set up in his hometown in 1981.
