Painter. Important exponent of humanitarian Realism and Pointillism. The son of wine-growers, in Milan from 1884 he attended the Brera Academy, and then continued his restless studies in Rome, Florence (where he met Nomellini) and Genoa. In 1892 another meeting with Nomellini led him to the Pointillist technique, which put him in contact with Segantini, Morbelli and Grubicy. Between 1896 and 1901 he carried out the Quarto Stato [Fourth State] (Milan, Gallery of Modern Art), a manifesto for social and artistic commitment. His career ended in suicide.
