LEONCILLO (Leonardi Leoncillo)

Spoleto (Perugia), 1915 - Rome, 1968 Sculptor. In 1935 in Rome he attended the Accademia and mixed with artists of the Roman School. In 1939 he began working with ceramics, enabling him to explore the identities of colour-matter. In 1940 he exhibited with Fancello at the Milan Triennale. After the Resistance, he became successful with his 'realist' works (Madre romana uccisa dai tedeschi [Roman mother killed by the Germans], 1944). In 1947 he became part of the 'Fronte Nuovo delle Arti'. Subsequently he embarked on a period of abstract neo-Cubism.
